Luc Can
Luc Can has a long and distinguished association with Monash University in Melbourne, Australia, having first come here to study for an MBA on an AusAID scholarship in 1999. Prior to that, he had completed a degree in languages at the Vietnam National University and in economics at the National Economics University in Hanoi.
In 1992, Luc commenced work with the Bank for Investment and Development of Vietnam (BIDV) as a foreign credit officer, progressing to become Deputy Director and Head of the International Banking Department, followed by Deputy Director and Head of the Securities Department. Recognising the need for some formal management training, Luc chose Monash University for his MBA studies. 'As an internationally recognised university, with an excellent research and teaching environment, I felt that the course would be sufficiently challenging for me and that it would give me the opportunity to choose the subjects directly relevant to my position at BIDV. Monash is also well known for its economics and business courses, particularly in my fields of finance and management.' On completion of his MBA in 2000 with a high distinction average, Luc was awarded a certificate of merit for outstanding academic performance.
Returning home in 2001, Luc was promoted to Director of the International Banking Department at BIDV, a position he held until 2004, when he decided to return to Monash to undertake a Doctor of Business Administration degree. 'The attraction of the DBA is the combination of developing research skills and the application of these in writing a thesis on a "real-life" topic related to my job.' Luc's supervisor, Professor Mohamed Ariff, is a senior academic, highly regarded internationally, and he has guided Luc through his DBA whilst also helping him develop as an independent researcher. Luc's thesis on 'Bank performance under IMF-supported programs: East Asian evidence' is nearing completion and he has already published a number of articles and presented at international conferences in Australia and New Zealand.
In 2003 Luc received the Australia-Asia Award to support him during his DBA studies (one of the only two Vietnamese students so far to have received this honour), and he was also named 'Face of the Year' by the Australian Alumni Association.
During his studies Luc has benefited from being an active member of student clubs and societies. He is President of the Monash University Table Tennis Club and has been Chairman of the Australian Alumni Association and Vice-President of the Melbourne Overseas Vietnamese Student Association.
Luc plans to return to Vietnam to continue his career in banking and finance, and would also like to further his experience in teaching and research.
Fortunately, I have applied and been awarded the prestigous 10-month Humphrey Fellowship (a US Fulbright Exchange Program) offered by the US Government (through Department of State). This program is designed for mid-career professionals/managers of various fields and from more than 100 countries (2-3 candidates for one country). The selected candidates are grouped according to their fields. Accordingly, I'll be going to the US to be attached with one of the top universities (not finalized yet) for 5 months, and then with one of the top banks in the US for another 5 months.
