Course pathways

Pathways to masters degrees

For students who do not have an undergraduate degree, Monash Graduate School of Business offers a single executive certificate - the Executive Certificate in Business which provides pathways to various masters programs.

  • Executive Certificate in Business
The four-unit executive certificate is designed as an entry point for students who do not have an undergraduate degree. The content of the executive certificate is equivalent to a graduate certificate and students who attain a credit average (60 per cent) may enrol in and graduate with a masters degree on completion of eight further units (assuming the masters degree is a 12-unit program).

For students with an undergraduate degree, Monash GSB also offers Graduate Diplomas that provide pathways to various masters programs.

  • Graduate Diploma in Applied Econometrics
The Graduate Diploma in Applied Econometrics provides an opportunity for graduate students from any discipline to enhance their quantitative skills and be equipped to undertake other rigorous postgraduate coursework programs in business. Students who successfully complete the Graduate Diploma in Applied Econometrics with an average grade of credit or above may apply for admission to a range of Masters programs offered by the Faculty, including the Master of Applied Econometrics.
  • Graduate Diploma in Economic Studies
This course is aimed at graduates of disciplines other than economics and commerce, graduates who have taken only the equivalent of first-year economics or economics/commerce graduates of more than ten years’ standing. Specialisations in economics and econometrics are available. Students who achieve a high standard will be able to progress to further graduate work.

Pathways to higher degrees by research

If you do not have the requisite background to undertake a higher degree by research, some coursework programs enable you to take research units as electives, providing the essential preparation for a research degree.

  • Postgraduate Diploma in Economics and Commerce
The Postgraduate Diploma in Economics and Commerce provides a fourth year of study, equivalent to an honours degree, for students who wish to undertake a higher degree by research but do not have the research background required to meet the admission criteria. Applicants should have a pass degree in the proposed discipline area of study, with an average grade of 70 per cent or above from a recognised tertiary institution. Students who successfully complete the Postgraduate Diploma in Economics and Commerce with a grade average of 70 per cent (HIIA) or above may be eligible to apply for admission to the MPhil or PhD programs. No credit for work done previously is available in this postgraduate diploma.

The Postgraduate Diploma is comprised of studies in research methods, a research project, and a combination of core and elective honours units determined by area of specialisation. The number and ratio of core and elective units will vary according to area of study; however the award requires completion of 48 points and is equivalent to 1 year of full-time study.

Specialisations are available in the following areas:

  1. Accounting
  2. Econometrics
  3. Economics
  4. Economics and econometrics
  5. Finance
  6. Finance and econometrics
  7. Management
  8. Marketing
  9. Taxation law
  • Master of Applied Econometrics
The Master of Applied Econometrics, which includes a compulsory research component of a minor thesis or research project, facilitates articulation to a higher degree by research. It is a unique and academically challenging program which offers the option of specialising in other disciplines within the Faculty of Business and Economics.

Alternative coursework pathways

The faculty also offers a range of coursework programs which may serve as a pathway to a research degree. These selected courses may be designed to include a significant research component and a minimum distinction grade is required in order to meet the HIIA equivalence requirement for admission to a research degree. Please see www.mrgs.monash.edu.au/scholarships/selection/autoh2aemonash.html for specific information regarding HIIA equivalence.
